Motorcycle Racing Equipment Musts

By Sam France

Racing a motorcycle is a lot of fun. However, this vehicle also can be dangerous. It is crucial that you protect yourself fully by purchasing the right safety equipment to use when riding your bike. You should not skimp on the type of gear you choose, for a number of valid reasons.

You need to realize we are talking about your life. Wearing an uncomfortable or poorly made piece of clothing just to save a few dollars here is not advisable here, because you could be taking unnecessary chances. You will need all the safety gear possible. If you do not have enough of this gear, you risk leaving part of your body unprotected, which defeats the purpose for wearing safety gear to begin with, while on your motorcycle.

For example, if you have a gap in your equipment and clothing at your midsection, you could badly scrape the skin there during a fall, allowing for an access point for damage into your body, even if you have protection across every other inch of your body.

Your equipment should include such things as a jacket, knee braces, a brace for the back, chest protection, boots, and of course, a helmet. If you can at all afford it, buy gear that is made from Kevlar. Falling from your bike and making contact with the road or other objects at high speeds in the process is almost as bad as getting shot, and Kevlar was originally used to protect people from gunshots. It is very important that you protect your body from scraped or punctured by anything while riding your bike.

It's also extremely important to protect your joints. That's why other "must haves" include elbow and knee protection. Besides a motorcycle helmet and jacket, theses are some of the most important items you can have. Your joints are weak points in your body during a crash and fall, and they are rather prone to breaking. Having protective surfaces over your joints is pretty important when getting safety gear.

It is important for you to wear a full-face helmet. This kind of helmet differs greatly from the skullcap style many states require. The full-face motorcycle helmet protects your face and entire head, and it often comes with a flip-up visor to expose your eyes when need be. It is so important to provide this type of protection to your head.

The last piece of important equipment we will talk about is a motorcycle stand. A stand will allow your bike to stand on its own at important moments or for storage. It should be sturdy enough to hold the full weight of the bike without it toppling over on you as you work on it. The bike weighs a lot, and if it fell on you, it could hurt you badly. The bike could also be damaged. This is why it is so imperative that the stand your get holds the bike securely, and is built for the weight of your particular model of motorcycle.
