Secrets Of Preparation For Vehicle Storage

By Mia Kent

Several things should be done beforehand before storing your car. And these should be faithfully kept otherwise you will suffer having dead batteries as well as broken brakes. Learn how to prepare your car for vehicle storage.

Servicing your car is necessary because this will keep you assured that the engine and the fluids on it are at their best status for storing. This will also keep the car from failing to start later on when it will be used again. Keep the fluids free from all sediments.

Have it be washed and waxed on its exterior because if the paint will not be cleaned and protected, the dirt or any other contaminants that are left sill cause corrosion of the paint and turning it into rust. Buff it or have it detailed if it is possible and the wiper blades maybe removed or lifted so that they would not flatten.

Vacuuming of the interior should be done as well as putting much detail on seats and floor mats which are more prone to being damaged. Throwing away of the trash is needed and avoid applying chemicals on materials like vinyl, fabric or leather. Washing of the windows should include their inside parts so that nothing will be missed.

Then you should not forget to change the oil because the old oil may become acidic and this will eat off the inner part of the engine while a fresher oil will take a longer time to break down. This way the seal of the engine will remain in good condition while the car is being stored. Also remember to change the filter and lubricate the hinges.

The battery should also be completely charged since electronics are faster to drain of their power. Batteries of old cars must be disconnected because if they are not, then they will easily be fully depleted leading to damage of the inner cells. Batteries of new cars are mush appropriately placed on a trickle charger because most of these have an advanced computer system.

The fuel tank must also be topped off because there will then be no room for the moist air for condensation. Fuel stabilizers are also available in a lot of hardware stores and they could be added so that the gas will not break down easily and evaporate. Synthetic oils are more preferred since they break down slower.

Checking if the brake is not engaged will prevent the breaks pads extending to the drum from rusting due to a long period of not being used and the parking break had been tuned on. If you will not observe this, the result would be that the wheel will be seized. Use wheel cocks instead to keep it in place and the wheels from running.

After you have done the necessary readying for vehicle storage, write a list of the things done. Keep this list on the gloved box of your car. There might come a time when you have to store your automobile again and you might have forgotten the step.
